The site had just been through a full redesign: new templates, new page slugs, new structure. Nobody had mapped what happened to the old URLs, and a technical SEO clean‑up was needed before the migration could be called finished.
Previously Indexed URLs Now Returning 404
URLs that had been indexed, or that were still receiving traffic and impressions, were returning 404 errors after the migration changed the site's page slugs.
Duplicate Pages, Broken Slugs & Duplicate Content
One published URL was duplicated outright, several slugs carried leftover -2/-3 suffixes, and blog posts weren't marked as translatable, creating duplicate content across English and German versions.
Incorrect Schema & Hreflang Issues
The homepage carried Article Schema (which has no business there), and hreflang implementation had mismatches and 3xx errors, confusing Google about language targeting.
Only 45 of 92 Sitemap URLs Indexed & Caching Failure
Google Search Console showed the correct sitemap hadn't even been submitted. Of 92 URLs in the corrected XML sitemap, only 45 were indexed, while WP Rocket wasn't generating page cache, causing slow load times.
Our Strategy
A structured, phase‑by‑phase technical SEO recovery — remap what the migration broke, resolve every flagged issue, then rebuild speed and monitor indexing back to full health.
- Extracted every previously indexed or traffic‑driving URL now returning a 404
- Redirected each one to its correct working URL and updated internal links accordingly
- Corrected the duplicated URL and every slug carrying a leftover -2 or -3 suffix
- Documented every redirect and slug correction in a shared mapping sheet for the client
- Resolved broken internal links, duplicate titles and meta descriptions, and structured‑data issues
- Fixed incorrect hreflang implementation, hreflang mismatches, and 3xx hreflang URLs
- Cleaned up unminified CSS and JavaScript, temporary and permanent redirect issues, and redirecting sitemap URLs
- Corrected missing meta descriptions, missing and multiple H1 tags, overlong titles, and heading structure — every fixable Semrush issue, resolved
- Enabled translation on blog posts so English and German versions could exist as distinct, separate content
- Removed the incorrect Article Schema from the homepage
- Validated the fix using the Rich Results Test, comparing before‑and‑after results
- Confirmed structured data now accurately reflects each page's actual content type
- Submitted the correct XML sitemap, since the right one had never been submitted before
- Worked through every GSC exclusion reason individually — 404s, noindex tags, redirects, blocked 4xx, discovered‑not‑indexed, and crawled‑not‑indexed
- Diagnosed the caching issue (WP Rocket failing to generate page cache) and replaced it with Super Page Cache, bringing load times to ~2 seconds
- Submitted indexing requests for every eligible URL and started Google's validation process
