One that you would never had guessed to be there. I don’t mean like an ancient teacher, just one that you might have had a huge crush on. My friends and I were talking about it and we all had different ideas of what we’d do. What about you?

A Radical Rethinking of Sexuality and Schooling: Status Quo or Status Queer?

$95.65

A Radical Rethinking of Sexuality and Schooling offers a startling and original critique of unexamined assumptions and liberal notions about sexuality and education in the United States. Tackling issues ranging from anti-gay harassment in school to children”s literature on gay themes, gender performances of teachers to HIV education, graduate school programs in education to gay men”s sexual cultures, Eric Rofes presents a compelling argument for the creation of a second generation of activism focused on queers, schools, and education.

Almost Home: America's Love-Hate Relationship with Community

Almost Home: America’s Love-Hate Relationship with Community

$6.45

For David Kirp, a gifted story-teller and journalist, the concept of community stretches beyond a cliched figure of speech to describe what happens when people make decisions that reshape one another’s lives. He has collected a fascinating variety of such stories from across America to re-create the immediate experience of community — tales that signify in their particulars, giving meaning to the much bandied-about idea of civic virtue. They paint a rich picture of how, for better and for worse, Americans live together. We meet two San Francisco families, one Nicaraguan and the other black, trying to live peacefully with each other; residents in the fire ravaged Berkeley hills, whose greed and architectural ambitions thwart attempts to build the new Eden of their dreams; parents and teachers lighting against long odds to improve the East Harlem public schools; residents of a small Southern town caring for a parentless teenager with AIDS; residents of the New Jersey suburb of Mount Laurel deciding whether poor families will be allowed to live in our town; and neighbors choosing sides when a black teenager kills his gay white neighbor. While there are real heroes — Ethel Lawrence, the Rosa Parks of the affordable housing movement; and Deborah Meier; tireless advocate for better schools — the stories are mainly about ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events. These beautifully written tales reveal individuals in the process of forming new alliances or falling back on familiar ones, bowling alone or promoting the common good. They show us, past all self-delusion, who we really are.

 Born Gay

Born Gay

$15.95

A key study in the psychobiology of sexual orientation and its true causes.Since the ground-breaking work of Simon LeVay and Dean Hamer in the early 1990s, a tremendous amount of new research has been carried out by scientists who now understand a great deal more about the biology of sexual attraction. In this book the authors show that attempts to find a sociological cause for homosexuality have little foundation and argue that popular efforts to blame parents or teachers for a child”s homosexuality are futile and unjust. Combining their own findings with all the available quantifiable research, the authors have, with this study, provided an urgently needed addition to the major work that has been done in this field.

All share in Sydney’s sunshine lifestyle, resulting in an image where body tone is as important as individuality. They pose amongst the rocks of Camp Cove, or in McRae’s own imaginary world, where computer technology helps the artist produce a striking series of contemporary gay icons.

This landmark book empowers educators to become visible, positive influences and role models in their classrooms and schools. As most homosexual educators, and even students, remain invisible due to possible hostilities of coming out, this eye-opening book presents recent research to help gay and lesbian teachers break their silence. It encourages them to speak out on issues of homosexuality where curricula, civil rights, personal freedoms, and social entitlements are concerned. Chapters of The Classroom Closet look closely at many issues surrounding the issue of homosexuality in schools. Pointing to reports of greater social support and legal protection than is assumed by most in the educational system, this book should be required reading for all persons concerned about continuing to provide high-quality education.

For many gay men and lesbians, Betty DeGeneres, the mother of actress Ellen DeGeneres has come to represent the mother stolen from them by homophobia. For many parents she has provided the inspiration to reconcile with their own children. In her new book, Just a Mom, Betty talks directly to parents, children, friends, teachers, employers, and politicians in a straightforward and heartfelt manner on homophobia and the destruction it causes in loving families and society at large. She counsels parents on how to react when their child tells them he or she is gay. She advises children on how to tell their parents and when. And, most importantly, she shows how to cross the divide of intolerance so families can be whole again. Now an activist and a national figure, Betty DeGeneres is a mother first, and in Just a Mom she is calling for love, compassion, and reconciliation for all gay men, lesbians, and their families from the bottom of a mother’s heart.

 My Father's Keeper

My Father’s Keeper

$0.29

My Father’s Keeper is the moving story of Jonathan Silin, a gay man in midlife who learned to care for his elderly parents as a series of life-threatening illnesses forced them to make the difficult transition from being independent to being reliant on their son. Their new needs and unrelenting demands brought parents and child into intimate daily contact and radically transformed what had been a distant and emotionally fraught relationship. My Father’s Keeper chronicles the ways in which the ideas and skills Silin acquired as an early childhood educator, a specialist in life span development, and a compassionate witness to the devastation of the HIV/AIDS crisis came together with his interest in human psychology to deeply inform his thinking about the dramatic changes in his family’s life and increasingly influence his role as his father’s (and mother’s) keeper. Jonathan Silin offers a series of valuable reports from what might be called the country of farewells, using his raw experience to explore important questions about childhood, education, parenting, privacy, control, mental health, old age, death, and forgiveness. This is a rich, careful, honest book, both nakedly personal and coolly philosophical. I’ve never read anything quite like it. –Christopher Bram, author of Gods and Monsters Jonathan G. Silin, a member of the graduate faculty at Bank Street College of Education in New York, has published articles in Harvard Educational Review, Teachers College Record, and Educational Theory, as well as in more popular periodicals such as Newsday, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Education Week. He is the author of Sex, Death, and the Education of Children, coeditor of Putting the Children First, and coproducer of Children Talk About AIDS.

Set in Little Falls, New Jersey in 1993, PINS weaves the classic story of a Catholic saint into a compelling modern life -and near-death- account of Joey Nicci, a fifteen-year-old wrestler. After befriending Donald Dink Kohrs, Joey and his new posse get involved in pranks and partying that eventually get out of control, resulting in the death of a maligned fellow teammate. The ensuing legal battle and media scrutiny alter Joey’s life and his self-perception while shattering his fragile love for fellow teammate Dink. Like his patron saint, his struggle for his beliefs forces him to endure increasing injuries and difficulties, on and off the mat. A compelling story of a loving yet confused family, coaches and teachers struggling with multiple issues of violence and bigotry amid the clan-like world of teenage athletes, PINS brings together elements now common in the media; bullying jocks, assaults on weaker students, faculty and students unwittingly allowing such behavior, and families finding the strength to overcome it. It also deftly retells the story of Saint Sebastian in a contemporary setting, but with an uplifting difference. With his sensational debut, Paul Golding, a writer of breathtaking skill and unflinching perception, joins Edmund White and Andrew Hollingsworth as a major chronicler of contemporary gay life.Cruising the seamy underbelly of London, James Moore is as eager to repel men as he is to attract them. But beneath his cynical exterior lie deeply embedded scars from a lifetime of betrayal and isolation. Born to negligent, self-absorbed parents and raised among upper crust society on a picturesque Spanish island, nine-year-old James is sent off to Catholic boarding school in England, where he is met with savageness by his peers and seduced by the twisted affections of his teachers. Charged with brutal honesty and caustic wit, The Abomination is a completely convincing, intensely graphic, disturbing yet electrifying account of one man’s tortured coming of age.
