Gay Group

How to get the courage to go to a Gay support group, ur experience?
I’m searching for one and want to make new friends like me and hopefully a boyfriend. I’m nearly 16 but I know if I find one I might be too shy to go in. What was your experience and how do I get the courage?
Hey Ste, I understand exactly what you are saying. I am several years older than you and returned to college in 2007 after being out of school for 15 years. I decided that I would go to a GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) meeting just for the same reasons that you listed except I wasn’t looking for a boyfriend. But I was also very hesitant. What I discovered was that it was a really cool place and I ended up making quite a few friends who socialize with on a fairly regular basis now. After completing my first degree last year, I returned this year to get another degree and have now been working with the GSA group to help them arrange social events (I worked in the film and entertainment industry for several years prior to returning to school) including a Second Chance Prom where everyone is welcome and same-sex couples are more than welcome. I then attended my first PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays). I was scared to death to be bluntly honest because I live in a fairly small town in Alabama. I worried about people seeing me there and even going in. I worried about whether it would be weird or not because our sexuality is not something that we get to discuss openly in the world without fear. It really was a great experience and I made a lot of friends who made me feel welcome. I made business connections that are sponsoring me for a stage reading of The Laramie Project that I am producing this year. So I understand your fear and hesitation. Here is how I did it: I just forced myself to drive to the meeting. I sat in the parking lot for a moment, took a deep breath and then walked in the door. I was glad that I did. Find one and attend. You will be glad in the long run because you will meet a lot of nice people who have so much in common with you. Good luck and stay strong. You can do it.

Gay Republicans $16.98 The 2004 presidential election left Log Cabin, the gay republican organization, in a state of extreme turmoil. President Bush had taken an open stand against gay marriage, effectively forcing the members of Log Cabin to chose what was more important to each of them: being gay or being republican. This documentary examines this difficult process and what it meant to many of the people involved. ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi rights. Faced with a difficult decision between their politics and their personal lives, various members of the community took diverging paths in their attempts to follow what they thought was right. The Gay Canon: Great Books Every Gay Man Should Read $3.98 There are countless works of interest to gay men in print right now–anthologies, novels, memoirs, and more. It is a reflection of progress that there is such an openly recognizable culture. Yet how to make sense of the choices offered? What do gay men need to read? What books have shaped the gay heart, mind, and soul? "The Gay Canon" gives its readers answers to these questions. Not only does it list the one hundred great gay books that have influenced writers and continue to shape the gay imagination, it also provides a deeper, more comprehensive look at the twenty-six most seminal works, each of which is followed by a series of useful group discussion questions. Reaching all the way back to Gilgamesh and continuing through classics like "Leaves of Grass, Confessions of a Mask, " and "The Wild Boys, " as well as more recent books like "Borrowed Time, The Gay Canon" consistently avoids impenetrable academic literary criticism in favor of a more popular introduction for general readers and book groups. "The Gay Canon" is a book to give to any young man just coming out, a book every gay reading group will want to rely on, and–most important–a book that will enrich and improve the gay story that continues to be written. |

Spiritual Direction and the Gay Person $28.52 The author of this practical and liberating book has many years of experience in the spiritual direction of gays and lesbians. To be gay or lesbian, he says, is to have received a special blessing from God. Spiritual directors, by recognizing and encouraging the homosexual giftedness of their directees, are calling them out of their tombs — an echo of the cry of Jesus, as the still-bound Lazarus emerges from the darkness of the tomb: "Unbind him and let him go " Spiritual Direction and the Gay Person is intended for spiritual directors and counselors who work with gay men and women. Original and much needed, and neither prescriptive nor advocating any particular position on civil rights or a particular denomination or faith group, this book will assist homosexuals in relationships, prayer, liturgy, and in the problems produced by their commitment to or rejection of institutional religion. |

Musings in Our Gay Daze $18.11 Disregarding the critics and quite a few threatened lawsuits Kyle Cicero once more enters the arena of literature to throw down the gauntlet. Taking up where his prior work, "The Gay Daze That Is My Life," left off he once more pontificates on the issues and foibles of the gay community and the straight world. Here are a few quotes that are found inside: About a certain religion that spearheaded the anti gay marriage drive: Well it just proves my point: you can’t trust a group that is one consonant away from being read as "moron" Gay groups who support "moderate conservatives" in a certain party to keep a "foot in their camp": While you are busy putting your feet into their camp just know THEY are putting theirs up a different anatomical area in our community. The benefits of having an elder straight doctor: If someone must know your true age then an eighty-seven year old straight man is the best repository of such secrets…. at eighty-seven how long can they be around to carry this knowledge or even remember it? How "jockus gayus" men speak a different language: I learned during my stay with them that such terms as "his stats," " his scoring records" or, " his positions" have a completely different connotation to them than I originally thought The horrors of an "authentic" Roman themed bar: They simply provided floor holes in a large "communal" bathroom. I don’t know about you but when I flash my jewels in the restroom it is purely a private matter…okay, a semi private one on a few occasions. The dangers of doing your own blogs: His silences at our gatherings that previously I’d assumed portended deep thoughts I now find, upon reading his blog, were merely a manifestation of the fact that he had the intellectual depth of a rain puddle. Texting, rejection as a "friend" by someone on their web site, the proper sequence to "greet gay" or host a "gay party" yes, it is all there and more as Kyle Cicero dishes the dirt, takes on the Internet, and tells it as it is in this newest work, "Musings In Our Gay Daze" |

Amy Lowell, American Modern $23.97 For decades, the work of one of America’s most influential poets, 1925 Pulitzer Prize-winner Amy Lowell (1874-1925), has been largely overlooked. This vigorous, courageous poet gave voice to an erotic, thoroughly American sensibility. Cigar-smoker, Boston Brahmin, lesbian, impresario, entrepreneur, and prolific poet, Lowell heralded the rush of an American poetic flowering. A bestselling poet as well as a wildly popular lecturer (autograph seeking fans were sometimes so boisterous that she required a police escort), she was a respected authority on modern poetry, forging the path that led to the works of Allen Ginsberg, May Sarton, Sylvia Plath, and beyond. Yet, since her death, her work has suffered critical neglect. This volume presents an essential revaluation of Lowell, and builds a solid critical basis for evaluating her poetry, criticism, politics, and influence. Essays explore the varied contributions of Lowell as a woman poet, a modernist, and a significant force of the literary debates of early twentieth-century poetics. In addition to placing Lowell in her proper historical context, contributors demonstrate her centrality to current critical and theoretical discussions: feminist, gay and lesbian, and postcolonial, as well as in disability, American, and cultural studies. The book includes a transatlantic group of literary critics and scholars. Amy Lowell, American Modern offers the most sustained examination of Lowell to date. It returns her to conversation and to literary history-where she belongs. |
