Articles About Gay Marriage

How is it possible to be a member of the Tea Party and Pro Choice and Pro Gay Marriage?
I just read an article about Tea Party members living in Washington DC who are Pro choice and Pro Gay Marriage. I am a bit confused, aren’t these conflicting beliefs? I know that the core of the Tea Party Ideology is small government, but aren’t most Tea Party members also conservative when it comes to social issues?
You are really overthinking it. Tea Party originally is about taxes. thats it. Fiscal responsibility, smaller govt and lower taxes. It has gotten hijacked by far right wingers, but the messege is the same. People are trying to use the Tea Party to push social issues, and by and large most don’t mind. But there are people who don’t have the same social agenda as the far right, but still want smaller govt, lower taxes…..people like me. I’m not a charter Tea Party member, but I believe in some of it. I’m pro choice, and Pro Gay Rights….I’m also conservative…fiscally, and a little socially. This is more Libertarian, but Libertarian isnt a viable party to win an election.
It’s a lot like Democrats believing in pro life because its the christian thing to do. You don’t here from them, but it’s a contradiction. They’re democrat for what ever reason, but they go to church. I’m pretty sure the stance of the church isn’t pro choice….how do they square it? Each person can’t be fit into the mold Republican/Democrat….Liberal/Conservative…..a lot of us are in the middle, and we vote accordingliy. We are also who decides largely who gets elected. Thats why second termers come back to the middle and who ever appeares more moderate or middle usually gets in.

Legalizing Gay Marriage $3.48 Every day seems to bring news of legal challenges to existing marriage laws and the constitutionality of any form of union for same-sex partners. In this timely and accessible book, Michael Mello argues that the public debates and political battles that have divided Vermont and Massachusetts will be repeated across the country as state after state confronts the issue of legalizing gay marriage. Mello examines recent landmark decisions in state and federal high courts granting civil rights protections to homosexuals. In Vermont, the Supreme Court’s recommendation that legislators recognize the "common humanity" that links all individuals irrespective of sexual identity and consider the question of same-sex marriage resulted in the first state legislation to establish civil union. In Massachusetts, the court’s ruling that gay marriage is a right protected by the state constitution has plunged the legislature into a contentious debate about a constitutional amendment. In both states, as in California and New York, public discussion of equal civil protections for gays and lesbians soon become mired in contending views of morality, religion, social mores, and the sanctity of heterosexual marriage. Mello regards the widespread and virulent opposition to any form of same-sex unions as proof that in Vermont, as elsewhere, homosexuals are indeed a "despised minority" in need of the law’s protection. Thus, civil union laws represent only a partial victory because they create a separate and inherently unequal category of relationships for gay people. Mello’s analysis of the issues provides an invaluable guide to the battles being waged in state legislatures and by politicians at the national level. |

Why You Should Give a Damn about Gay Marriage $3.98 From the cover of "Newsweek," to the Rose Garden at the White House, the long simmering issue of gay marriage has erupted into full boil. While countries such as Canada and Belgium have recently legalized gay marriage, the US seems steadfastly locked in the past. Change, Davina Kotulski argues, will only come through organized activism, but the importance of legalized gay marriage remains unclear to many in the GLBT community. There are no less than 1049 federal rights granted to hetero-sexuals that remain out of reach to gays and lesbians as long as they don’t have the right to marry. This quick and simple read outlines the rights, benefits and protections afforded through marriage, exploring the negative effects of not having these rights through case examples of real couples who have experienced hardships and composite vignettes illustrating how couples can be hurt by lacking access to these protections. Through learning of the great disparity between how same-sex couples are treated compared to heterosexual couples, and of the membership privileges society affords married couples readers of this book will begin to see new possibilities in their lives, and be inspired to join the growing freedom to marry movement. Davina Kotulski, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist with deep roots in the freedom-to-marry movement. She has organized same-sex marriage gay pride contingents throughout Northern California, first with Californian’s for Same-Sex Marriage, and then with Marriage Equality California. She has been active in fighting antigay legislation such as the Knight Initiative, is on the board of Marriage Equality California, and serves on the Education and Religious Outreach Committee of the California Marriage Coalition/Freedom-to-Marry Coalition. |

Gay Marriage: For Better or for Worse?: What We’ve Learned from the Evidence $6.48 Opponents of same-sex marriage in the United States often claim that allowing gays and lesbians to marry will lead to the downfall of the institution of marriage and will harm children. Drawing from 16 years of data and experience with same-sex unions in Scandinavia, Gay Marriage: For Better or for Worse? is the first book to present empirical evidence about the results of same-sex marriage (in the form of registered partnerships) from the Nordic countries. Spedale and Eskridge demonstrate that conservative defense-of-marriage arguments that predict negative effects from gay marriage are invalid, and the Scandinavian experience suggests that the institution of marriage may indeed benefit from the enactment of gay marriage. If we look at the proof from abroad, the authors argue, we must conclude that the sanctioning of gay marriage in the United States would neither undermine marriage as an institution, nor harm the wellbeing of our nation’s children. |

Gay Masculinities $66.98 Without question, the media have perpetuated stereotypes of gay men, often portraying them as effeminate. Such a limited depiction illustrates the problematic conflation of gender roles and sexual orientation, raising important questions about the relationship between the two. The articles collected in this volume represent an attempt to understand how contemporary gay men in the United States engage in, contest, and modify controlling notions of masculinity. Peter Nardi, with contributions from leading scholars in the field of gay studies, examines the ways in which gay men develop a sense of masculine identity, with a special emphasis on the every day lives of gay men. These essays consider a great range of issues, from gay masculine identity in business, church, home, and community, to interpersonal relationships of gay men. A fascinating and thought-provoking addition to the Research on Men and Masculinities series, Gay Masculinities is a must read for any scholar of sociology, gender studies, education, anthropology, psychology, or communication. |

Beyond (Straight and Gay) Marriage: Valuing All Families Under the Law $21.46 Part of the Queer Ideas series, edited by Michael Bronski A persuasive argument for why married couples, gay or straight, should not receive special rights denied to other families Nancy Polikoff asserts that, in American law, marriage is the dividing line between those relationships that matter and those that don’t. A woman married to a man for nine months receives Social Security benefits when he dies; a woman living for nineteen years with a man or woman to whom she isn’t married receives no government support. Beyond (Straight and Gay) Marriage reframes the family-rights debate by arguing that marriage should not bestow special legal privileges upon couples because people, both heterosexual and LGBT, live in a variety of relationships–including unmarried couples of any sexual orientation, single-parent households, extended biological family units, and myriad other familial configurations. These relationships, like marriage, are about building and sustaining economic and emotional interdependence and nurturing the next generation. Polikoff shows how the law can value all families, and why it must. "Polikoff wades through legislation and legalese with style and substance, plus a touch of flair. Impeccably researched, Beyond (Straight and Gay) Marriage offers an evocative read that takes in the full breadth of the issues affecting marriage and avoids pedantry while remaining persuasive." –Publishers Weekly "Polikoff’s argument is provocative, illuminating, and original." –John D’Emilio, author of Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin |

How I Made My Husband Gay: Myths about Straight Wives $28.58 How I Made My Husband Gay is a self-help book for women who learn or suspect that they may be married to a gay/bisexual man. Compiled, edited, and contributed to by Bonnie Kaye, M. Ed., the international expert in the field of straight/gay marriages, this book helps women by revealing the signs and patterns in their marriages that could be "Red Flags." There are 35 stories from members of Kaye’s international support group who talk about those signs they initially missed, as well as how they were blamed by their gay husbands for the failures in the marriages. Kaye also has her women discuss ways that they "caught" their husbands, as well as how they started over after ending the marriage which she refers to as a "mis-marriage" or a mistake of a marriage. About the Author: Kaye has counseled more than 30,000 straight women and 2,000 gay men since 1984 after the demise of her own marriage to a gay man. She hits home the message that gay men have no "choice" in their homosexuality – but they do have a "choice" in being honest about it. She works with women to help them rebuild their lives after the end of their marriages, and strongly advocates divorce in an amicable way whenever possible. Kaye consults for the major news media, and her website at www.Gayhusbands.com is used as a resource for shows including Oprah, Montel, and Tyra Banks. She has appeared on numerous national news shows including CNN and FOX News with her message that homosexuality does not belong in a marriage to a straight partner. Kaye is also a strong advocate for gay rights and publicly speaks about the need for society to accept gay people for who they are instead of fighting to change them into who theyare not. This is Kaye’s fourth book on this topic. Her other books include Is He Straight? A Checklist for Women Who Wonder, Doomed Grooms: Gay Husbands of Straight Wives, and Straight Wives: Shattered Lives. |

Why Marriage Matters: America, Equality, and Gay People’s Right to Marry $3.98 "At its core, the freedom-to-marry movement is about the same thing every civil rights struggle has been about: taking seriously our country’s promise to be a nation its citizens can make better, its promise to be a place where people don’t have to give up their differences or hide them in order to be treated equally." "Why Marriage Matters" offers a compelling, intelligently reasoned discussion of a question at the forefront of our national consciousness. It is the work of one of the most influential attorneys in America, who has dedicated his life to the protection of individuals’ rights and our Constitution’s commitment to equal justice under the law. Above all, it is a clear, straightforward book that brings into sharp focus the very human significance of the right to marry in America — not just for some couples, but for all. Why is the word "marriage" so important? Will marriage for same-sex couples hurt the "sanctity" of the institution? How can people of different faiths reconcile their beliefs with the idea of marriage for same-sex couples? How will allowing gay couples to marry affect children? In this quietly powerful volume, the most authoritative and fairly articulated book on the subject, Wolfson demonstrates why the right to marry is important — indeed necessary — for all couples and for America’s promise of equality. |

What Is Marriage For? $10.48 In the wake of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s historic Goodridge decision, a reissue of the bible of the same-sex marriage movement Will same-sex couples destroy "traditional" marriage, soon to be followed by the collapse of all civilization? That charge has been leveled throughout history whenever the marriage rules change. But marriage, as E. J. Graff shows in this lively, fascinating tour through the history of marriage in the West, has always been a social battleground, its rules constantly shifting to fit each era and economy. The marriage debates have been especially tumultuous for the past hundred and fifty years–in ways that lead directly to today’s debate over whether marriage could mean not just Boy + Girl = Babies, but also Girl + Girl = Love. "Read this book if you want to understand the movement for same-sex marriage–and to counter those who argue against it." –Mary Bonauto, lead counsel in Goodridge v. Mass. Dept. of Public Health "E. J. Graff’s What Is Marriage For? is the place to start reading for anyone thinking about the words ‘lesbian, ‘ ‘gay, ‘ and ‘marriage’ in the same sentence. It’s engaging, it’s fun, and it puts the lie to those prophets of gloom and doom who think every push for greater equality–whether it be women’s suffrage, reproductive rights, or interracial marriage–signals the end of civilization."–Evan Wolfson, Freedom to Marry "An enlightening romp through the history of marriage in western Europe and the U.S." –Cassandra West, Chicago Tribune |
